Subscription States (or status)

To efficiently manage your subscription portfolio, it is important to understand the lifecycle, possible scenarios, and the states a subscription can assume depending on the configured payment method, recurrence settings, and charges made.

What are the possible states of a subscription?

A subscription is created when a customer signs up for a plan using Checkout Guru. From this moment on, it can assume one of the states below.

The state (or status) of the subscription is influenced by the selected payment method, subscription rules, recurrence settings, and the result of the last charge made.

Subscription Status

What it means

Applies to

Trial

The subscription is in a trial period. The system awaits the scheduled date to make the first charge.

Subscriptions for products that have a free period configured.

Trial Canceled

The subscription has a trial period configured and it is ending. The system cancels the subscription because there is no first charge.

Subscriptions for products that have a configured free period that has already ended.

Inactive

Payment is pending. The system is awaiting payment confirmation to activate the subscription.

The 1st charge of a subscription with an offline payment method (e.g., bank slip or PIX).

The subscription where the sale is claimed, i.e., disputed (chargeback) (e.g.: credit card)

Active

The subscription is paid and up to date.

Subscription where the most recent charge had payment confirmed, regardless of the configured payment method.

Overdue

There was an attempt to charge, but the payment was not approved or confirmed.

Subscription with failed renewal payment (from the 2nd charge onwards).


Cancelled

The subscription will no longer be renewed (no new charges will be made).

(1) The subscription was manually canceled in the Guru admin.

(2) The subscription was manually canceled in the customer portal (1).

(3) Subscription with failed payment that exhausted the number of attempts(2) when the system is configured to cancel the subscription in case of payment failure(3);(4).

Expired

The subscription has completed all charges defined by the plan (no new charges will be made).

Subscriptions for products that have a pre-determined number of charges(5).

(1) For this option to be available, it is necessary to activate the cancellation operation in the customer portal.
(2) You can customize the number of charge attempts for a subscription.
(3) The cancellation due to payment failure only takes effect on subscriptions with infinite billing cycles.
(4) All active subscriptions of inactive customers for more than 90 days are canceled, and if the customer remains inactive for more than 90 days, all subscriptions (overdue, active, and trial) and all tickets (open) are canceled.
(5) The buyer needs to settle/complete all cycles/charges for the status to be expired.
