Contact variables or fields are placeholders that represent and display contact attributes in a place outside of the contact detail. In Guru, a variable can be used as:

Placeholder in a message: used to insert personalized content in transactional emails or SMS that you configure.

Field mapping to another tool: used to send contact attributes to other tools such as an autoresponder or CRM, for example.
Most variable names are self-descriptive and their nomenclature describes the context and name of the attribute. For example: Contact -> E-mail refers to the contact's registration email.
It is worth remembering that when sending the message or mapping fields, the variable name is replaced by the attribute value, which in the example above could be maria@mail.com.
